. A house with brand new expensive furniture 's with wall-to-wall carpeting and top of the line appliances . Walter , who recently got a transfer from Connecticut to New York City . The most evident assumptions that could be made of the Lamberts were that though they belonged to an affluent class they were hardworking , independent and who also loves their privacy and their quiet time with each other They were close to their children and each other . They believed in family values like respect shown to elders by their children . They loved spending time with friends who share their values and their traditions When they had got married , both of them moved to higher management positions . They chose to live close to their parents , as they were a tight knit family . Both were usually tired after a long and tiring day Their neighbors usually dropped in the evening that denied them their quiet time and privacy they needed after a hard days work . Peggy explained that since their neighbors weren 't as career oriented as them they thought a different neighborhood would suite them and their needs Walter got transferred to Connecticut after 5 years . Their neighborhood in Connecticut was different . As the woods and the affluent community surrounded it , people kept to themselves . Since their son had no friends they usually spent all their free time entertaining him . Both their families were affected by the move . Since they weren 't able to spend their time with Peggy and Walter , though Walter 's parents used to come by most of their time as well as during holidays . Both Peggy 's and Walter 's parents were solid , stable members of the black working class . Peggy 's mother was unique , independent , and energetic person who used to encourage her to children to be reliant independent and hardworking and urged them to go for the gusto , in every endeavor they pursued . Though her parents weren 't very talkative they always communicated their feelings to their children . On the other hand Walter 's parents were stable and supportive though they did not emphasize much on independence . They were a close-knit family .
