Paper Topic:

careers in sociology

About three-fourths of the sociologists in the United States are employed by universities and colleges . The majority combine teaching and researching in the department of social science , such as anthropology . But sociologists are also known to work on other divisions as well like medicine , law , business , agriculture , and social work (the fastest growing career . Sociologists are employed by agencies of federal , state , and local governments . Others work for private industry . Self-employed sociologists offer consulting services In all fields of employment sociologists often conduct surveys and make case studies . Some specialize in

public opinion study , market research or advertising research

A career in sociology requires a master 's degree with a major in sociology and for top positions a doctor 's degree is desired . A graduate with a bachelor 's degree may secure routine employment such as an interviewer or caseworker . A doctorate is essential for the individual who wants to obtain a professorship at a university , and it is commonly required for the more responsible positions in government private industry , and various nonprofit organizations . In planning graduate study the school should be selected carefully to meet the requirements of the student since different institutions seem to emphasize different aspects of the study of sociology . It seems a particularly active job market is opening for the sociologist who specializes in research methods and advanced statistics

The central function of sociologists is to develop sociology as a special social science . The function includes the training of the next generation of professional sociologists . Other functions lie in several fields of applied sociology . Some of the applications are direct for example , in market research , business activities , and the work of government bureaus and juvenile delinquency courts . The most important applications of sociology are probably indirect . They involve the transmission to experts in other professions of the results of relevant sociological research . Transmission happens naturally when sociologists are to the staffs of schools

Sociologists have at least two other functions . The first is to help develo9p related fields , such as anthropology , social psychology , the psychology of personality , political science and economics . Some of this help is given through direct collaboration with workers in these fields . Some of it stems from developments in sociology , developments that necessarily have meaning for the other social sciences , all of which , like sociology , are concerned with the phenomena of human behavior . Finally sociologists have the function of teaching undergraduates who will not become professional sociologists . In doing this task sociologist not only can broaden and deepen the layman 's appreciation of the world we live in and can help keep ideology from straying too far from verifiable facts
