A career in sociology requires a master 's degree with a major in sociology and for top positions a doctor 's degree is desired . A graduate with a bachelor 's degree may secure routine employment such as an interviewer or caseworker . A doctorate is essential for the individual who wants to obtain a professorship at a university , and it is commonly required for the more responsible positions in government private industry , and various nonprofit organizations . In planning graduate study the school should be selected carefully to meet the requirements of the student since different institutions seem to emphasize different aspects of the study of sociology . The central function of sociologists is to develop sociology as a special social science . The function includes the training of the next generation of professional sociologists . In doing this task sociologist not only can broaden and deepen the layman 's appreciation of the world we live in and can help keep ideology from straying too far from verifiable facts
