He served the office for two terms , lasting from 1953 until 1961 . He was already a great military commander from World War II prior to his presidency Eisenhower was born in 1890 in Denison , Texas to a religious Presbyterian household . He attended West Point and served the army right after graduation . Though he did not fight in actual combat , he quickly rose in ranks because of his

good planning and strategic abilities which impressed his superiors . When World War II broke out , Eisenhower became a national hero when he led Operation Overlord , the Allied invasion on Northeast Europe , an important battle in WWII history . Upon his return from war , he was appointed as Army Chief of Staff . In 1948 , he became President of Columbia University . In 1952 , he ran and won the Presidential elections of the United States by a landslide and got re-elected in 1956
Eisenhower was a popular president , even among the Democrat majority in Congress
His popular project was signing the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1965 into law which authorized the Interstate Highway System , the single largest public works program in United States history . Defense spending was high during his administration as Eisenhower continued to fight the Cold War began by his predecessor , President Truman .
