By this time , U S was already an industrialized nation and Japanese were well aware that industry was the determining factor for the nation 's strength so in to prevent any nation from intruding their country they embarked on the policy of industrialization to safeguard their independence . With industrialization , new unanticipated problems arose as U .S . and Japan 's neighbors refused to buy its products . Japan had a high population that relied on trade so any nation that blocked its trade routes would be attacked but to avoid confrontations , Japan kept its army on its trade lanes . This plan worked for sometime but it did not solve the problems as its rivals deliberately refused to trade with it . To solve this problem , Japan decided to attack Manchuria and later went on to conquer the very heart of China in 1937
The United States which was very much interested with industrialization and could do anything to further their interests , realized that Japan was emerging to be the strongest power in Asia something that would have compromised their plans therefore , they decided to side with the weaker nations by providing them with military and economic assistance and in 1941 , US completely cut off all its trade deals with Japan thus crippling its economy .
