(1 ) In John Updike 's "A " the character Sammy is what most people consider lower class . This is determined not just by his job but his demeanor and misuse of language . For example in the first paragraph Sammy states "In walks these three girls in nothing but bathing suits and later when someone is being mean to Queenie he explains "she remembers her place , a place from which the crowd that runs the A br must look pretty crummy " The misuse of language specific verb and tense is used by Updike to

show the differences in class between Sammy and Queenie . He didn 't really want to be with Queenie but he did want to live in her class . Sammy shows his envy and states he wishes he was part of a family with a "father and the other men were standing around in ice-cream coats and bow ties and the women were in sandals picking up herring snacks on toothpicks off a big glass plate and they were all holding drinks the color of water with olives and sprigs of mint in them . Sammy is searching for his life and a new life . He wishes that he was not part of the lower class and he wishes that he did not have a dead end job at a grocery store . By quitting he is trying to move away from his lower class past into a higher class and a better position in society (2 ) Chopin uses several symbols to evoke the feeling of rebirth renewal , and autonomy . Just after Louise is told about the death of her husband , she enters her bedroom and finds the open window ' Through it she can see new spring life ' on the street below , and realizes that now she too can be part of that life , on her own terms . The open window symbolizes her clear passage to exist fully in the world without her husband standing in her way . Louise hears and sees the countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves . Birds are a traditional icon of freedom . Chopin specific word choice , in the sentences following Louise briefly mourning her husband include - monstrous joy victory , Free ! Body and soul free . All of which are not the usual emotions one would expect after hearing of the loss of a loved one . In the late 18th century a woman 's role was solely to care for her husband and children , never simply for herself . If a woman had no husband , she did not exist (3 ) She was drinking in the very elixir of life ' and for the first time Louise truly live , breathed , and existed in a society dominated by men and in a her own world controlled by her husband .
