Those who are against stem cell research contend that the process of deriving embryonic cells from embryos entails and constitutes murder of human life in its early form . Opposition , which mainly comes from pro-lifers and conservative religious groups like the Roman Catholic Church and several other protestant churches contend that using stem cells means deriving benefit from the destruction of human embryos--fertilized eggs in the early stages of development--in their eyes no less a crime than abortion (Lacayo . Some of those who oppose legal abortion in the United States , are therefore also opposed to stem cell research because for them , both involves destroying what they claim as human life in its early stage of development .
