Extra Credit Lab Question

Aim : To identify the difference between a hard-boiled and raw egg using the knowledge of rotational motion

Materials Required : A Raw egg , A Hard-boiled egg , A Flat surface (eg Kitchen table

p Take a raw egg , set it on

its side and spin it with your fingers . Do the same with a hard-boiled egg . The raw egg does not spin for more than a few rotations whereas the hard-boiled egg spins very fast

The raw egg spins very slowly because most of the mass of the egg is in fluid state and the fluid inside the egg slides as we try to spin the egg . So the egg does not obtain the rotational velocity that we are trying to apply to it . The egg tends to stabilize at a rotational velocity equal to that of the fluid , which is much slower than the speed used to spin the egg

On the other hand , the hard-boiled egg has most of its mass as a solid and attains the same rotational velocity equal to the speed used to spin the egg . Hence it spins faster when compared to the raw egg...
