Robert Frost 's poem , The Road Less Traveled ' illustrates a traveler on a journey faced with a decision . The speaker metaphorically makes the road symbolize life . Individualism is a key element throughout the poem Internal conflict causes the speaker to have a melancholy mood at the end of the poem . Rhyme patterns helps to explain the speaker 's decision Frost communicates and depicts an individualism theme through images metaphor , and rhyme patterns

Throughout the poem there are images that portray the speaker is an individual and in a state of being alone . The speaker is faced with a fork in the road . He /she has decided to take this journey on his /her own . The color of the yellow wood (1 ) depicts the speaker is towards the middle of his /her life . Since yellow is often associated with the fall season , the speaker is leaving his /her youthful days . The speaker is faced with internal conflict as to which path he /she should take Despite the fact that there are two paths (1 ) where he /she is not fully alone , the ultimate reality is that he /she is not able to keep the company of both . The speaker portrays his /her sadness by saying sorry I could not travel both (2 ) this conveys the message that the speaker would have liked to keep company of both paths . The speaker wanted to make both sides happy . Unfortunately with life , there can only be one decision and one outcome . In the end , the speaker is alone He /she has no one to help make the decision as to which path to take One traveler (3 ) depicts he /she is solely responsible for his /her actions . At the end of the poem , the speaker repeats the word `I ' twice to emphasize he /she was responsible for the outcome of the decision and I- /I took the one less traveled by (18-19 . The speaker 's mood turns to being melancholy at the end because he /she is not sure he /she made the correct choice . I shall be telling this with a sigh (16 illustrates that the speaker is not completely satisfied with his /her decision . The speaker would have much rather seen both paths if he /she could . He /she turns melancholy because nothing grand has come of the decision or else the speaker would not be alone pondering the effects of it
