The progressive movement ' of the early 20th century addressed what many saw as problems in the new industrial . What were some of these problems and what remedies did Progressives attempt

Most of the problems addressed in the Progressive Era had to do with the conditions of industrial labor . Wages were unregulated , and reflected unfair practices where women , minorities and children were paid less than men for similar work . Factories would also employ children in dangerous jobs . offered compensation for the frequent injuries incurred on these jobs , and working conditions were not regulated

in any way . Progressive sought to repair these ills by instituting standards of labor such as minimum wage , and regulations mandating limitations to the labor of children

There was also the matter of political corruption in which wealthy captains of industry controlled the government through the use of political machines . The Progressives sought to resolve these deficiencies through giving more direct control of government to the people . The did this by allowing referendum , recall and initiative , and passing the 17th Amendment , which provided for the popular election of U .S . Senators
