Women artists and their contribution towards development of American art In Daniela Salvioni and Diana Burgess ' book , Art /Women /California 1950- 2000 , they review the work of women artists during the second half of the twentieth century . Women artists contributed in both vibrant and original ways towards expanding the meaning of the word 'art . They examine how women artists have been affected by the political changes after the Second World War and the influence it brought to art they produced during this period . They do so by comparing themes and practices these women shared . They also trace the impact of women artists during this period towards the Californian culture and the rest of America 's culture today . They focus their research in California because of factors that made the state unique as well as its function as a microcosm of national and global political advancements . California enjoys excellent location in terms of space . It 's near the earth 's biggest water body , also has quality physical space due to a variety of physical features as well as man made features , giving room for space towards the west of California . Due to its healthy agriculture , California also enjoys excellent economical space because many immigrants toil on its soil . Space can also be the locus of the body , and this had an important effect on women artists in California . Space to them was also an inner personal freedom . California , therefore offered an ideal ground for cultural expression hence room for free expression of the women in artistic ways . During the second half of the twentieth century , there were excellent art schools and programs in California . These encouraged exploration of new artistic practices and encouraged artists to exhibit their work without public pressure . Artists presented in this book were all women painters , photographers , sculptors , performance artists , installation artists , film makers , video artists , artists using new technology and graphic artists . They were diverse in age , ethnic culture , social background and formal artistic training and their work had different styles , mode of address , content and intended audience . So much art in the 1980s addresses issues of cultural and gender identity which was the theme of female artists in the 1960s . We can , therefore trace the historical origin that precede feminist e .g . the Civil rights movement . The war triggered economic and social upheavals that brought about...
