The Many Phases of The Darling

Out of the given short stories , this paper will only focus on The Darling ' by Anton Chekhov . The story revolves around a woman named Olga Semyonovna , who has grown accustomed to always having a man in her life From these men , she patterned her life , routines and most especially opinions . The sad thing about this was that the men came and went . Her first and second husband both died , and she was devastated by that . She was heart-broken , and she had to start from scratch each time

. It was ironic that the only people who managed to promise to be with her forever ended up leaving her to deal with her loss , all by herself

On the other hand , the veterinary surgeon who was her constant companion during the latter part of her life , stuck with her throughout the years . He even managed to return after a very long trip to some other country , and eventually , he brought his wife and child to come live with Olga . When this happened , Olga got so attached to the surgeon 's son Sasha , and the same cycle happened . She began to revolve her life around the little boy as her maternal instincts kicked in , and she gave utmost importance and attention to Sasha 's schooling .
