Young Goodman Brown

Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne was heralded as an exemplary short story of his time . Written at a time when the short story form itself was yet to be made popular , Hawthorne 's work gained much critical acclaim . The tale of young Goodman Brown is one of Nathaniel Hawthorne 's most popular work and is still studied by both students and critics p

The story in brief ? Hawthorne begins his short story with a little love and faith , and ends it with gloom and despair , gripping the reader fully , between both ends . Right at the very start , the protagonist of the story is seen bidding farewell to his wife , who is ironically named Faith . While Faith begs him to stay awhile , Brown insists he needs to be on his way and sets off , nevertheless with a heavy heart and a pricking conscience

Brown was definitely young and perhaps even innocent before he set out on the journey into the heart of the dark wilderness . But when he did return , after having seen the true colors of people he thought he knew young Goodman Brown , had literally `seen the world , his world , and it had not been a pleasant experience for him . It had left him anything but young

The conflict that Brown suffers during his journey in the woods is shown to be internal through the number of details that are projections of his unconscious . The devil 's arguments seemed rather to spring from up in the bosom of his auditor ' - that is , Brown himself . When the echoes of the forest mocked him ' Brown is projecting his emotional state onto the forest . The further Brown sinks into despair , the clearer it becomes that what he sees and hears is...
