There are two paths in front of every man , the good path , and the bad path . If the man chooses the good path , then most probably , he will go to heaven . If he chooses the bad path , then he might go to hell . But of course , the devil may use evil deeds to trick you that the bad path is the good path , and the good path the bad path

Young Goodman Brown is a story where the main character was tricked by the devil into believing that the bad path is the good

path . The devil in the form of an old man , had a meeting with Goodman Brown in the woods , and convinced him that his parents and grandparents took the same path . What held Goodman Brown back is his love for his wife , Faith

In the beginning of the story , we read that Young Goodman Brown did not want to leave his wife alone . Faith was described as a woman wearing pink ribbons . She was not comfortable with the idea that her husband would leave her alone during the night . Young Goodman Brown argues that they were but three months married and she already doubted him . She tells him that she had a bad dream about his journey , but she eventually lets him go . The use of Faith as the name of the main character 's wife is a symbolism . It means that every man has principles , and they hold on to those , unless tempted . Faith also symbolizes the inner goodness of every person that tries not to do any evil . The pink ribbons that Faith wore would be used later on by the author to refer to her

Young Goodman Brown then assures himself that the journey towards the evil meeting would be the first and the last , and that afterwards , he would stay beside Faith forever . This symbolizes every man 's justification that every evil thing that he does would be the first and the last , when actually , it wouldn 't be

In the story , it seems that Young Goodman Brown knows that the person he was going to meet was the devil . The author also established that the fellow-traveler was the devil through his staff by describing it as a serpent-like

Young Goodman Brown tried to resist the devil 's invitation by thinking about his wife , and by stopping on the stump of a tree and refusing to go on walking . However , when he hears the voices of people he knew as religious , worshipping the devil , he loses control and eventually is tempted to join them . The author of the story perhaps intended to mean that man is convinced to forget his good principles when he believes that everybody around him do bad things . The clichy `the more the merrier ' applies to this situation
