The year 1984 was smack dab in the middle of all things we now associate with the decade : technological advances , ridiculously big hair and fashion , an obsession with primetime soap operas , an emerging drug culture and Reagonomics . While many citizens welcomed the year with trepidation , expecting society to turn into George Orwell 's vision in the novel , 1984 , others viewed its inception with great anticipation whetted by the promise of new things to come

. Many of the items which were new to 1984 are still in use today such as cloning , affordable compact disc players and the Macintosh Apple . And much of the events in society were groundbreaking in that they laid the foundation for many of today 's issues

The Child Abduction Act of 1984 was passed , which included defining abduction as a parent or other relative taking the child out of the United States without proper consent and permission in addition to the traditional definition of being abducted by any other non-familial person . Vanessa Williams , the first Black Miss America , resigns after photos from a Penthouse shoot are scheduled to be released publicly . The effect of Williams ' resignation was to put increasing scrutiny on the Miss America pageant , which many Americans thought to be irrelevant , and by the end of the decade , the pageant 's organizers instituted a new policy of requiring the winner to develop a social platform and support a worthwhile cause or issue of her choice . Another women in the news of 1984 was Geraldine Ferraro , the first woman to ever run for the political office of Vice President of the United States on the Democratic party ticket of Walter Mondale , paving the way for future politicians , such as Hillary Clinton . Senator Clinton has much to thank Ms . Ferraro for in setting a precedent for females in politics

In July of 1984 , Jesse Jackson , American Civil Rights Activist and Baptist minister , made a bid for presidential election , only the second African-American to do so in history . While he was not successful , he backed the Democratic candidate , Walter Mondale , and delivered the Democratic National Convention Speech in the style of a gospel tent revival . Drawing on the creation of his Rainbow Coalition , Jackson urged American citizens to bestow equal rights upon all people , no matter the color of their skin or their original nationality .
