While many citizens welcomed the year with trepidation , expecting society to turn into George Orwell 's vision in the novel , 1984 , others viewed its inception with great anticipation whetted by the promise of new things to come

Another women in the news of 1984 was Geraldine Ferraro , the first woman to ever run for the political office of Vice President of the United States on the Democratic party ticket of Walter Mondale , paving the way for future politicians , such as Hillary Clinton .
