YAFT Fitness Certification

When meeting with John 's parents , I would first interview in detail what the parents are expecting from a program with a YAFT instructor They have expressed interest in making John an active child like most of their friends ' sons . While it is important to John 's health that he reduce some of his lazy , arrogant ways and become more active his parents need to be realistic . An essential element of a program with a YAFT instructor will be that the parents

not push John to do more than he is capable or interested in . While it is important for John to be active early for a life long healthy lifestyle , making John a stellar athlete should not be the goal , but instead instilling active lifestyle habits . The goal is to give John a fun program that will interest him and hopefully make him want to spend more time doing active activities with his friends

To help John , I would meet with John on his first visit to find out his specific interests . Based on these interests , I would formulate a program that incorporates John 's interests . For example , if John likes to play with balls , I would incorporate fun games into a program that includes Swiss balls . John could do core exercises using the Swiss balls that could be formulated into competitive games such as the Hot Potato Game (Kelly , 1999 . I could use an odd shaped bouncy ball that we could bounce back in forth that would force John to run to catch the ball , making a fun cardio game . I could also use either tennis or racquetball courts to play soccer tennis or racquetball . If through the interview with John he discussed interest in lifting weights , I would put together a functional core program that incorporates age appropriate weighted exercises into fun games that would work strength through movement

In all , to successfully implement an active program for an 11 year old John 's parents need to have realistic expectations . The program needs to be fun , positive , and include specific interests of the child laying the foundation for an active lifestyle
