Heathcliff of Wuthering Heights

In the course of reading the novel entitled Wuthering Heights , we will come across a dark skinned and haired boy by the name of Heathcliff . He was once an orphan boy from Liverpool that Mr . Earnshaw later adopted to be his own son . He then lived at Wuthering Heights with his step sister Catherine and step brother Hindley . In describing Heathcliff , author Emily Bronte 's own words were , from the very beginning , he bred bad feelings

in the house ' Dark , looming , ominous are some of the adjectives that can be used to describe his personality . His is a treacherous temperament , with mood swings almost in haste . Heathcliff is capable of deep seated hatred but is inept to forgive and to compromise . His character has been portrayed as a besieged spirit , at certain times during the course of the novel . He will later fall in love with his step sister Catherine . Upon receiving the news that his lady love will marry Edgar Linton , Heathcliff will pack his bags and leave Wuthering Heights only to return three years later . His return will mark the start of his revenge . For him , pay back time begins and it is for that purpose that he came back from where he left . His marriage to Edgar 's sister Isabella is just one of the things among his well laid out revenge plot . Isabella 's life was hell in the hands of Heathcliff . Taking over Wuthering Heights , he took Hindley 's property and his son Hareton away . Like pawns on a chess game , he used the younger Catherine and Hareton to get even by acquiring for himself not just the Wuthering Heights but also the Thrushcross Grange . He succeeded in making the lives of his oppressors really wretched . After Catherine 's death , his whole being turned to seek revenge from all those whom he deemed has wronged him . His loved one 's death evidently took its tool on him . This truth is reflected when he said the words , why did you betray your own heart , Cathy .you loved me , what right had you to leave me ? I cannot live without my life , I cannot live without my soul ' Life without Cathy is like bending back a stiff spring Pain and rejection co-existed with the way his life unfolded . The orphan boy found a family through his adoption , but ironically , he was treated as an outsider . He was mistreated by his step brother . Life was cruel for Heathcliff . During the time when he so deserve it , love sociability and education were denied for him . He was made to lose everything . From the family he thought he has gained , to the status he deserves to enjoy , to the life he 's supposedly privileged to have , the treatment any human being is entitled to receive , and most importantly the love he so rightfully should have enjoyed .
