. To this day , there is no reliable record that maps out all of Iran 's nuclear facilities transparently to the international community . While Iran claims to honor the Nuclear Non-proliferation treaty , it continues to mine and process uranium without proper consent from the United Nations Although Iran had claimed that it would be transparent with its nuclear activities , it has repeatedly denied inspectors from inspecting military facilities suspected to house undeclared nuclear technology and research . It has also withheld pertinent documents that contain the details regarding its uranium enrichment activities since the 1980s . The United States along with other concerned nations does not trust Iran 's word regarding the extent and purpose of its nuclear program . The IAEA while being the sole entity that could supervise Iranian nuclear activity , has proven to be lacking in political will and international power as evidenced by its performance in North Korea . As a result Iran 's nuclear power including its potential to build an atom bomb remains a mystery that needs to be solved
