Of the Use Which the Americans Make of Public Associations in Civil Life

This chapter from the book of Alexis de Tocquevill called Democracy in America summarizes the importance of public associations in maintaining equality in the society and achieving development or progress . In the US , numerous associations cater to different needs and wants of the Americans . They unceasingly create associations for

different situations and various purposes . It can either be for a religious undertakings to build churches or for a serious issue to formulate solutions . However if the objective changes into determining the truth and promoting patronage , an association can produce a society . Most Americans practice the formation of associations in pursuit of a common goal which is for the improvement of the well-being of an individual and the society . Moreover , the success of an association depends on the type of society that they have . In aristocratic communities , wealthy people have the tendency to dominate people from inferior class but they have the capability to stand on their own because of they are strongly held together ( De Tocquevill , 2001 , Democracy in America . Meanwhile in democratic nations , people are more dependent with each other to the point that they can not act on their own without the help of other people . But it is easier to form effective associations in a society filled with elite people because the resources are at their disposal that results to faster and more productive turnouts . In democratic countries , quantity is needed for an association to acquire a certain degree of power . If the citizens fail to make an association , the government can increase their influence to fill in the absence of having groups in the society . As a consequence , people can lose the drive to interact or to be with other people due to stricter and biased rules of the government . Also , without associations , progress of other aspects of society will not materialize . To maintain a sustainable society , there should be an equal distribution of power to the government , aristocrats and associations
