Write a brief statement (500 words/3500 characters or less including punctuation, but not spaces) describing your reason(s) for pursuing graduate or postbaccalaureate study. Include any additional information concerning your preparation that is pertinent
I am sure that applicants into graduate programs present a wide range of reasons as to their desire for admission . Some reasons are altruistic and humanitarian . Certainly , many people are merely seeking a comfortable living and lifestyle doing something they feel they will enjoy . Of course , the ideal situation would be to find a profession that combines the ability to help others (if that is your desire simultaneously with a means for satisfying one 's personal needs and desires . In my case , I believe I can achieve that goal I began suffering

from excruciating headaches in 2004 and from that time until 2006 I suffered daily . My initial approach to dealing with this situation was to take strong pain killers , but my suffering only got worse , not just from the pain , but from frustration and from the impact the pain had on my life . Subsequently , I began to talk to people and to investigate books and journals for the various causes of headaches in search of a solution . Ultimately , I learned that diet nutrition and lifestyle can play a crucial role in causing headaches , so I decided to look into the possibility that changing my diet might alleviate or end my headache pain . As an initial step , I decided to maintain a daily food diary that would follow my consumption . This led me to notice that my headaches might be related to consuming refined foods , especially refined sugar and flour , and to skipping meals causing me to go for long periods without eating
After noting this possibility , I took action to test my idea . I cut back my consumption of refined foods and increased my intake of whole grain products , fruits and vegetables in season and organic foods including organic milk . I also began eating at more regular time intervals . In a sense , I was following Hippocrates ' injunction to Let food be your medicine ' To refer to another philosopher , Aristotle who said , We cannot learn without pain , I had quite literally learned from my pain . My dietary changes plus regular daily exercise in the form of brisk walking eliminated my headaches and made me feel much better . The changes in my lifestyle made profound changes in my life My diet and my lifestyle quite literally became my medicine
Subsequently , I began studying nutrition more closely and taking nutrition courses . My efforts have led to a passion for a deeper knowledge and understanding of nutrition for personal gain and to educate others . I even left a high paying career in management to pursue what is now a more satisfying passion for me , a career in nutrition . Since I began delving more deeply into nutrition , I have volunteered at the South Asian Heart Center , Women Infant and Children 's clinic , Lite For Life Center and Kaiser to explore different work settings . I can now say from experience that I enjoyed working in these settings and I was invigorated by the impact that dieticians and nutritionists can make on people 's lives . I...
