As the twentieth century dawned technological advances went forward at break-neck pace , including advances in aviation . The dream of flight was one that mankind had pursued since time immemorial , and it finally came in small increments The first balloon flight occurred in the

19th century , the first Zeppelin flight in 1900 , yet the secret to heavier than air flight still eluded man . Amidst all of these advances , two brothers - bicycle mechanics from Ohio - worked in secret to solve the mystery of flight and solve it they did . However , to accomplish this , the brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright , had to literally invent everything about flight , from the wing design and shapes , to the propellers , to the control systems , to the methods for testing these designs (the first wind tunnel . Yet despite the seemingly insurmountable obstacles and competition from other inventors , such as Samuel Piermont Langley , the brothers through a combination of perseverance and ingenuity , made the first successful powered heavier than air flight in Kitty Hawk , North Carolina in December 1903 . After their first flight , there were several claims from other people that they in fact made the first flight , but these claims are dubious due to the fact that they were made AFTER the first flight . The development of the first airplane is a fascinating story and has left a lasting and profound impact on the world as we know it from shrinking the delivery time of mail from weeks to days , travel from months to hours , projecting warfare across vast distances heretofore unimagined , and ultimately to the exploration of other worlds .
