Religion is interwoven with the social , economic , and political life of the people . It is properly one of the areas of interest to a sociologist because of its influence on the individual and its functions in society Thus , religion unified system of beliefs and practices relative to sacred things , that is to say , things set apart and forbidden - beliefs and practices which unite into one single moral community called a church all those who adhere to them

. Important practice of religion is the observance of rituals which prescribe some courses of action for dealing with sacred . These rituals are repetitive sets of action and patterns of behavior in relation to the sacred for the regulation and ing of social lives . Ritual acts may be in the form of prayers singing , chanting , and sharing certain foods . The rituals bring the believers of any given religion together

Moreover , Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism ) encompasses a broad variety of beliefs and practices , not all of which are shared by all Hindus , and many of which actually contradict each other . It is probably unique among the religions of the world in its tolerance of diversity . It is a completely decentralized religion , with no hierarchy of clergy and so supreme authority . Unlike Christianity , it had no single founder whose teachings have been propagated by his disciples . Although most of the basic beliefs of Hinduism achieved their present term about the time of Christ , the roots of the religion are much older some of the same gods worshiped by Hindus were being worshiped by their ancestors nearly 4 000 years ago . As Hinduism developed , it continually absorbed and reinterpreted the beliefs and practices of the different peoples with whom it came into contact . This process of assimilation occurred differently in different parts of India as a result , Hinduism also displays a great regional heterogeneity

A further , more basic source of diversity in Hinduism is the distinction between the self-conscious philosophical religion , developed in the intellectual atmosphere of large cities and scholarly academies and the unreflective folk religion that has evolved among the uneducated in the 450 ,000 villages of India (Chaudhuri , 1999 . Philosophical Hinduism and popular Hinduism , as the two varieties have been , called have influenced each other greatly throughout history , but the differences between them in belief and practice remain very significant
