Synopsis The Mission ' is a British film dating 1986 and stars Robert De Niro as Rodrigo Mendoza , Jeremy Irons as Father Gabriel , Liam Neeson as Father Fielding and Ray McAnally as Emissary Altamirano Under the terms of the 1750 Treaty , Spain was required to transfer ownership of tracts of land in modern day Paraguay under Jesuit influence to Portugal . The Jesuit was a Christan religious , under which missionaries belonging to the would set up independent missions in native lands of South America , aiming to preach and teach Christianity to the natives

while allowing them respite from discrimination from the Spanish state
The movie traces the life of Father Gabriel , who makes his way up a waterfall setting and into the dense jungle . He aims to interact with the hostile natives above , establish a mission and hence preach Chrisianity , hoping to convert the entire community of Guarann Indians residing there . Guarann Indians . The other leg of the tale is Rodrigo Mendoza , a mercenary and slave trader who is torn apart at the grief of having murdered his own brother .
