John Irving was born John Wallace Blunt , Jr , on March 1 , 1942 in Exeter , New Hampshire . His father was an Army Air Force pilot , He and his mother Frances divorced before Irving was born . He was six years old when Irving 's mother remarried . Her new husband adopted Irving , and gave him the name he is known today . Irving never met his biological father . Colin , his stepfather taught history at the exclusive Phillips Exeter Academy . Irving suffered from undiagnosed dyslexia . But despite his poor grades he gained automatic entry in Exeter , because of his rights as a faculty child . In Exeter he took up wrestling which became an integral element in his novels . Irving loved wrestling because it was something he was good at . He once said : I think the sport of wrestling , which I became involved with at the age of 14 . I competed until I was 34 , kind of old for a contact sport . I coached the sport until I was 47 . I think the discipline of wrestling has given me the discipline I have to write ' 2 He continued his interest in it at the University of Pittsburg , then to New Hampshire

Irving was 26 years old when his first novel 'Setting Free the Bears was published . It had good reviews but did not receive much readership His second and third novels did the same . When he published his fourth novel The World According to Garp ' the novel became a bestseller and made Irving an immediate star . This led Irving to become a full-time writer which made him a household name , and gave him the bestseller status in all his subsequent novels . Garp made him wealthy , thus , he was able to focus on fiction writing as a vocation . He also accepted short-term teaching post and served as assistant coach on his son 's wrestling teams

John Irving 's ' the world according to Garp ' was relatively well received by the critics , as written in the In the April 30 , 1978 edition of the Washington Post Book World , William McPherson wrote that The World According to Garp is "A wonderful novel , full of energy and art , at once funny and horrifying and Heartbreaking . You know The World According to Garp is true . It is also terrific .3

In a positive review in the New York Times dated April 13 , 1978 Christopher Lehman-Haupt said "what is easily [Irving 's] best novel to date . Mark Stevens , in a brief review published in the March 2 , 1979 issue of the National Review , wrote that "The World According to Garp is the work of an extravagant imagination " In a review published in the April 23 , 1978 , issue of the New York Times...
