Thomas Freidman is an expert in Middle Eastern studies , having graduated from Brandeis University first with a bachelor 's degree in the subject and Oxford University with a master 's degree in the subject Growing up in Minnesota , Freidman immediately gained an appreciation and a love for other cultures . After graduating from Oxford , he positioned himself to further his understanding of

the Middle East , serving as a correspondent to Israel for The New York Times . It was that experience abroad that drove Freidman to write this book , and it helped him understand some of the changes taking place around the world . Though the book does not specifically speak to his experiences in Israel , it does highlight the author 's unique perspectives on globalization and the changing world . Freidman is the owner of three Pulitzer Prizes - two in international reporting and one in commentary , which speaks highly of his ability and his global perspective on matters of the changing world
