The institution of slavery has been a permanent fixture in civilized society . Sumerian clay drawings from 4000 BC showed war captives being tied , whipped and subjected to forced labor . In Egypt , papyrus records from 2100 BC contained accounts of private citizens buying and selling slaves . The first written laws that introduced the legal status and worth of slaves were created in Babylon in around 1790 BC

harsh treatment that they received from their Spartan masters . Slaves in the Roman Empire waged the Servile Wars , a series of three unrelated slave revolts that took place between 135 BC and 71 BC . In Russia , a group of runaway serfs and slaves known as the Cossacks established independent communities in the southern steppes during the 16th and 17th centuries

Numerous slave revolts took place in South America and the Caribbean in the 18th and 19th centuries . Those that transpired from the late 18th to the early 19th centuries , however , had a distinct quality - they were participated and led by slaves that espoused religious ideologies . Many leaders and participants of the 1823 Demerara revolt were slaves that were inspired by Methodist religious teachings . The African Muslim rebellion of 1835 , meanwhile , was staged by Yoruba and Hausa Muslims who were enslaved during and after the Sokoto jihad
