However for some people it is simply making a choice and standing by it especially for those who are left with no choice and enough opportunities . Although these are two different points of view on career development , I personally believe that it is and should be a developmental process . Establishing a career is part of self-improvement and fulfillment . Like attending

school to become educated , joining a religious institution for direction and affiliation , or gaining friends being married , and having kids , career development is a part of life that helps an individual map out who he is and what his life is about It all starts with a dream . When we were still young , our dreams were about who or what we want to become when we grow up . These dreams guide our life , as to what we are going to do and discover how we are going to fulfill them . Our choice of course in our college years becomes a vital role in what our occupation would be in the future . Therefore , we select a course we are skilled or interested in
Our work becomes an environment for continued learning after school . We apply our knowledge and skills at work , and continue to improve them as we go along with it . We perceive progress by stages at work , such as having increase in salary , being promoted , being trained for other tasks and responsibilities , and such . With this in mind , we realize that our career is a developmental process . It follows stages where we progress because of learning and improved skills . We become more knowledgeable about our work . We master and understand the nature of work as time passes by . For instance , employees are trained and coached to succeed in their field of industry . When they exhibit excellent work skills and outputs , they become promoted to becoming a team leader perhaps . When they meet all requirements and expectations for such position , they become promoted to a managerial position . Career as a developmental process is not only marked by promotion , but also by knowledge and skill acquisition . Work experience in terms of duration of time one worked and the various tasks , responsibilities and undertakings one met during work improves the knowledge and skills of workers . Through promotion and knowledge and skill acquisition , career is regarded then as a force that fosters development
