p Executive Summery

FTD Enterprises is a chemical company that produces small quantities of rare and expensive specialty chemicals and it is located in Albany , NY It has buildings that contain the main office , the manufacturing factory , the Research Development department , and the depot /packaging center . This report evaluates the Information Systems security such as use of LAN , WAN and e-commerce and proposes a plan for further securing the operations of the company

Introduction

The employees of the company use

laptops and their home PC to connect through a VPN with the main office . Others can connect to the network using 802 .11g wireless-enabled laptops . The four buildings of the site are connected by switches in a hierarchy and Cat6 Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP ) cabling is used to allow for 1Gbps speed . At the top of the hierarchy sits a DELL PowerConnect 5012 Gigabit Ethernet Managed Switch to which four Dell PowerConnect 3024 building switches are connected There are four Cisco Aironet 1100 wireless access points located in each one of the buildings (one per building ) and connected to the Dell PowerConnect 3024 building switches . Inside the buildings , a star topology is used with Cat5e UTP cabling to allow a data transfer speed of 100Mbps . To allow connectivity to the other sites through the Frame Relay , a Cisco 2600 router is used . A Watchguard Technologies Firebox (R X1000 appliance is connected to the router (Watchguard , 2006 . The main facility is connected to the Internet through a national ISP and one Cisco 2600 router together with another Watchguard Technologies Firebox (R ) X1000 appliance for 50 VPN remote users is in place . These two routers are connected to a multiplatform Cisco 2691 Router and the sole routing protocol run at each location has been RIP . During peak hours the network traffic sometimes grinds to a halt . FTD Enterprises want to focus security assessment that will allow it to gain a better understanding potential corporate network vulnerabilities , determine and improve the current wireless network configuration , determine and improve the current security risks

Work

To improve the current system of the company it is feasible to understand how LAN and WAN works and how it can be improved to decrease network traffic . Below shows the basic works and schedule need for FTD to changes its system completely

Installation of OS Windows 2000 Advance Server

Network Architecture

Wired LANs use Ethernet cables and network adapters where it uses central devices like hubs , switches , or routers to accommodate more computers . It is difficult and very expensive to installing Ethernet cables because cables must run under the floor or through walls However , it is extremely reliable and only common failure is when there are loose cables .
