Work and Organization - Delegation

Delegation primarily refers to the giving of a task to another person who is usually a subordinate . The reason may be any , but it is essentially the transfer of primary autonomy to the second person to perform the same assignment . It empowers the person who is being given the authority , and gives him the opportunity to make decisions . It is shift of responsibility from a higher to a lower level . Absolute delegation of authority is not possible . This is done with a sense of shifting the responsibility to

the other person or group of people , with the intent that they shall perform the task to the same level , if not better . An important thing about delegation is that the task should initially be governed by the delegator himself . It should not be a task that is exclusive to the subordinate in that case , it would not be delegation but rather a specific task of the subordinate . The fact of the matter is , that current day management in organizations ask for the managers to be a lot more than administrators they are required to make critical , creative , and far-sighted decisions that directly affect the course of the organization and the employees . It is hence rationalistic to let the run-of-the-mill tasks decisions to be taken buy someone lower down the ladder , and for the important ones to be flowing directly out of the senior managers . The delegator essentially is involved with decisions that shape policies and hence the direction in which work is to be shaped . Mundane tasks should therefore not take his energies , and he should focus on macro issues that are far more important for the responsibility that he has . If an organization is prepared to...
