Introduction

If you are sitting in a hotel or a coffee shop , or a library or even at the airport there is a likelihood that you are in the range of a WIFI or Wireless network . Many people tend to use wireless network at their home

with the desk top computers . Cities are providing free or cheap wireless internet accessibility to its people . The future of wireless networking suggest that it is going to be so extensive that anyone anywhere can use it without the use of wires . There are numerous advantages of Wireless networks . It is inexpensive and simple to set up . Wireless networks are modest you may never know when you are in the range of a wireless network

WIFI is in for another banner year . The market researchers at Infonetics Research say unit shipments are up 31 percent over 2003 , and compound annual growth should remain at around 37 percent through 2007 . SOHO and consumers still represent the majority of worldwide hardware revenues but we should begin to see more widespread deployments among enterprise customers . The two most frequently cited reasons for slow adoption by commercial customers have been security and management . Both these issues have been addressed , with new security standards and the introduction of wireless LAN switches

While 802 .11i , the new privacy standard that incorporates the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES ) was the big story for 2004 , its adoption will be slow . Encryption is done in hardware , so implementing 802 .11i will require significant equipment upgrades . Many enterprise-grade access points that shipped during 2004 can be upgraded to 802 .11i with a firmware download , but the current crop of wireless NICs will have to go

In the meantime , the Wi-Fi Alliance 's Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA standard addresses the security concerns of most enterprise users , so it will continue to be a viable interim strategy . Going forward , the two main requirements for Wi-Fi hardware will be 802 .11i for security and 802 .11a so users can be migrated to the larger and less congested 5-GHz band

Voice will continue to be a minor factor in the coming year . The delayed ratification of the 802 .11e standard for quality of service (QOS ) in WLANs is only a minor element in that estimate , however . The Wi-Fi Alliance has come up with a quick fix for QOS called Wi-Fi Multimedia which delivers four priority levels rather than 802 .11 e 's eight levels .But whether it 's four levels or eight , customers simply aren 't ready for wide-scale deployments as yet . Most are still struggling to get their WLANs to work for data , so voice will stay on the back burner . The exception to this will be health care and other specialized segments that have...
