Unlike the other wars waged , the Second World War was the deadliest and largest war in history . About 2 .5 percent of the the world was eradicated . It took place between 1939 and 1945 ending in the atomic bombing of the two cities of Japan , Hiroshima and Nagasaki World War II started as a response to Germany 's military aggression under Nazi and fascist leader Adolf Hitler . Germany resented the Treaty of Versailles specifically the Guilt clause of the treaty and yet despite the Treaty 's provisions the Allied powers hesitated to enforce

such provisions . It was only after Hitler became bolder and re-armed Germany that the Allied were jolted from it laxity . When Germany invaded Poland because the Nazis considered that the Jews were of an inferior race and must therefore be eradicated , it signalled the start Second World War . On the other hand , Japan , ruled by a militaristic faction slowly emerged as a powerful empire . It started by invading China in to reinforce its insufficient and meager stock of natural resources . The United States entered into the picture by providing China with clandestine military assistance while instituting restrictions on the raw materials for Japan . Had the restrictions or ban on the raw materials such as fuels and other necessities continued Japan would have stopped in its invasion in China . Faced with two choices , whether to stop the war and invasion of China or going to war with the United States and the USSR , Japan chose to go into war with the United States instead . It launched an attack on Pearl Harbor which angered the Americans and after three years of aerial attacks on Japan and areas which it had already invaded , it culminated with the atomic bombing of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki , ultimately forcing Japan to admit defeat and surrender to the United States days before USSR declared war with Japan as well
The Second World War having the most enormous number of deaths and casualties not only on the part of the rival troops but on innocent civilians as well . The atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki brought into light the veracity of using such powerful weapon into war wherein innocent civilians suffered . On the part of the United States , it stood by its decision to use the atomic bomb because Japan , in its 3 years of invasion had already killed , injured and tortured thousands of American troops and civilians as well . Moreover , had the United States used the conventional means of launching an invasion on Japan , it would have proved to be a disaster for the United States . The atomic bombing killed more than 150 , 000 Japanese and six days after , the Japanese emperor was forced to admit unconditional surrender and the United States . On the other hand , the war initiated by Germany ended after the death of Hitler . His successor failed to bring up German war efforts . The effects of the war started by Germany remains unparalled in terms of the atrocities...
