When used for non-medical purposes , these drugs are as harmful as the illegal drugs The fact they can also be gotten over the counter makes it very easy to be accessed by professional athletes

Prescription drugs are effective and safe when used in their right dosage levels , form and the intended time (Tricker , 1989 . However prescription drugs can also be abused just as illegal drugs , when used for non-medical purposes . Abuse of prescription drugs to build up one 's muscles or to enhance one 's performance can have dare consequences which can also lead to death . It is disturbing to note that prescription drug abuse is on the increase with athletes shifting from illegal drugs like marijuana . Although statistics on abuse of prescription drugs have not been followed much , it is quite obvious that the rates are alarming (Toohy , 1996

Prescription drugs are those drugs that have been prescribed by the doctors for patients to use . When patients experience problems of any kind and /or type , they consult their doctors with the aim of finding a solution to the medical problem . The doctors will go ahead and prescribe the type of medication required for their patients . In this scenario drugs will be focused on . Many people have ended up misusing or rather abusing the prescribed drugs . Many cases are mainly coming up in the sports world and especially in athletics . Professional sports men and women in the modern sports arena are falling victims of prescription drug abuse . This is as a result of many reasons which range from enhancing their performance to an alternative for lack of using the illegal drugs . The use of illegal drugs was discovered by the athletics professional bodies all over the world and was banned immediately Athletics would use these drugs for their own personal reasons . The drugs would be used to the disadvantage of other competitors . This led to complains from the athletes and other professional bodies

It was therefore in the interest of the concerned bodies to ban the use of the drugs so as to create a level playing field for the athletes .
