Why has the military played such a major role in the political and social life of certain Asian countries?
For most countries in Asia , military has played a role in the formation of their political and economic system . It is interesting to know how a defense force which has the responsibility to defend their nation can control the entire country . From being a servant of their nation , they became the brain that controls every political and economic decision of their motherland . Great examples are the PLA of China and SPDC of Burma . For many years , their government was controlled by military forces and these military forces have a great influence in their

br political and economic status . From the time of Mao Zedong , the PLA which is also known as the red army had a great role in shaping Chinese Communism . They are also the most powerful and influential group of people in China . On the other hand , the military has remained the face of the government in Burma since 1962 when General Ne Win took control of the country . But it was in 1988 when the military officially took the most powerful position in Burma . Since then , the SPDC (State Peace and Development Council , formerly known as the State Law and Restoration Council became a great factor in the development and even declining condition of Burmese economy
In this , we will compare and contrast these countries in terms of the influence of military forces to their political and economic situation , a well as the response of people and effectiveness military intervention to their government . Let us first consider the role of military forces in shaping the nation of Burma . For many years , Burma is known its political instability and violation of human rights . The political imprisonment in her own house has made Aung San Suu Kyii a popular figure of a military ruled nation . Political killings and mass demonstration became a popular scenario of a politically instable country and Burma had achieved that title
The ruling junta changed its name to the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC ) in 1997 , but did not change its policy of autocratic control and repression of the democratic opposition . In 2000 , the SPDC announced it would begin talks with the political opposition led by Aung San Suu Kyi , who had been released once from house arrest in 1995 , only to be detained once more . These talks were followed by the release of many political prisoners and some increase in political freedoms for Aung San Suu Kyi and the NLD . On May 6 , 2002 , she was allowed to leave her home and subsequently traveled widely throughout the country . On May 30 , 2003 , Aung San Suu Kyi and a convoy of her supporters were attacked by a group of government-affiliated thugs . Many members of the convoy were killed or injured and others remain unaccounted for . Aung San Suu Kyi and other members of her party were detained , and the military government forcibly closed the offices of the NLD
We can 't deny that SLORC had a good intention when it came to power...
