Maladaptive drinking compels the victim to do all it takes to get the alcohol . All they work for is channeled towards getting themselves alcoholic beverages while other areas like grooming are often neglected . Their social circles also change drastically because this lifestyle compels them to acquire new friends who have the same drinking habits . Old friendships are destroyed because the time spent with them also diminishes owing to the difference in lifestyles . The other family members may in turn blame themselves for the drinking problem of their colleague Most of the alcoholics turn to illegal activities , in to secure drinks , such as prostitution , drug trafficking , swindling and even stealing . When parents get into such activities , their accomplices become the most frequent visitors to their homes since alcoholics can no longer maintain friends who are not inclined to alcohol . Consequently children of such victims are exposed their parents ' accomplices who pose a threat of becoming bad role models . Children can easily be influenced negatively by their habits and subsequently find themselves indulging in them . The lives of such children evolve around alcohol , drug abuse and prostitution such that this becomes all they know about life . A desire to try taking alcohol or other substance surges and they eventually fall into that trap which may take intervention of other parties to help them out .
