Eden . The garden contains all the things that man and woman need to maintain themselves , including many fruit trees . But in the middle of the garden , God has placed a special tree called the tree of knowledge of good and evil , and he instructs his subjects not to eat , or even touch , this tree , telling them that if they do they surely will die (The question of why God would put such a dangerous thing at the center of man 's garden of earthly delights is perhaps a question that can only be asked after the fall , by a mortal human , descendent of Adam and Eve

Eve is told by the serpent that she will not die if she eats of the tree , but in fact her eyes will be open to knowledge (both good and evil , which the serpent says that God fears . It seems that God lie and the serpent was true , because she doesn 't die , gives of the fruit to Adam , who eats it , and their eyes are opened . We first see that manifest as shame over their naked bodies , which now Adam and Eve are said to cover with a fig leaf . But more than what or how they see is changed - the garden is effectively destroyed .
