marble , granite and sandstone designed by prominent American architect Robert Mills in 1840 's and located in Washington D .C . The monument is a US Presidential Memorial constructed for the first president of the United States , George Washington . The first president won independence to America by winning the American Revolutionary war over the British by leading a revolutionary continental army . Americans express their gratitude and respect to the Father of the Country ' with this monument

Brief History of George Washington

The US Department of interior stated that George Washington took over command of newly formed Continental Army in July 1775 and was an international figure with the roles that he played in French and Indian war . George Washington was an inspiring leader with remarkable abilities to obtain the best results from scanty material and untrained armed forces commandeering a small Continental Army . His persistent efforts to secure essential reinforcements and supplies to his troops from reluctant governors and assemblies helped in obtaining food and clothing to often cold and hungry Continental Army which finally went on to win independence . He also ensured alliance with France to guarantee the achievement of American independence ' At the end of American Revolution George Washington was the hero and commanded unparallel general respect and admiration in military and civilian life . No other American military hero has possessed in equal measure so many outstanding qualities of leadership

The ensuing years were critical since the central government established under Articles of Confederation was weak and its existence was endangered . In the national crisis George Washington was chosen to preside over the 1787 convention leading to the drawing up of Federal Constitution and in 1789 he was unanimously elected as the First President of the United States of America . He retired in 1797 after successfully completing the great work entrusted to him . George Washington had not disappointed the people both as a leader in war and peace . Washington died in 1799 but people recognized his leadership qualities , republicanism and nationalism .
