For various reasons South which was referred to as the Confederate States of America seceded from the North which was referred to as the Union . North and South grew in different ways with North cities being centers for manufacturing and wealth with many skilled workers . This created a difference between North and South with deep social

, economic and political differences . In South there were no manufacturing , people were not skilled with most of them being farmers and slaves did most of the work in plantations . If there were no slavery there would be no Civil War between North and South . Slavery was the immediate cause of American conflict which was a great political factor with a long gathered passion . But slavery was not the sole cause of conflict there were other factors . Both Northerners and Southerners believed they fought against oppression and autocracy , Southerners fought for their own right to self-government and Northerners fought for oppression of slaves
