In the early seventeenth century , abortion was considered a religious crime and was punishable by the religious laws . Abortion has become a controversial and highly debated amongst the pro and anti-abortionists who view the issue from different perspectives . The pro-abortionists argue that the mother has the right to decide on whether to take the life of the unborn or otherwise . On the other hand the anti-abortionists insist that abortion is crime which involves the

taking of life of another being . Since the ruling of the first abortion case , the abortion issue was considered a federal judgement where all the states were required to adhere to the federal ruling . However , this ruling has degenerated to a state matter where it is up to the state to legalize or criminalize abortion
