Anglo-Saxons were introduced as pagans when they came to Britain . They worship nature and religion was only a means to gain material wealth Anglo-Saxon society was divided to social classes - the king , being the highest , and the two levels of freemen - the upper and lower class Slavery was very rampant during this period . It has also been adopted by Anglo-Saxon culture . During free time , people are engaged in dice and board games as a form of leisure . Traveling from one place is just common because they travel for business purposes

In Anglo-Saxon culture and literature , warriors are heroes . Themes of the stories were the reflection of what is really happening to the society during those times . They are described as honorable warrior Warriors should be ready and willing to fight and win battles for the people and are efficient decision maker that is they should be intelligent and brave . Strength and physical appearance are also important for an Anglo-Saxon warrior . But despite the characteristics that he possesses , he should also be kind and down to earth at the same time . These warriors are characterized as stoic and appear fearless at all times . They also aren 't engaged to romantic relationships because most of their time is devoted to travel and battles . These warriors has to show nobility in actions and words . This warrior culture gives importance to martial arts and the armors of the warriors were definitely the most valued possession . These highly valued armors are the helmet , spear , sword , seaxe , shield , axe , bow and sling and armor The story of Beowulf also has the characteristics of Anglo-Saxon poetry theme , tales of kings , superhuman powers , dragons , etc

Beowulf is a very good example of an Anglo-Saxon hero . He shows great strength and courage after each battle . For Beowulf , although strength is important , a hero must also possess courage . Courage is important in Anglo-Saxon culture and must be shown through deeds whatever the consequences may be , even facing the deadliest enemy
