Ageing and independence

Growing old is a subtle process of transforming our passion and focus to simpler things in life . Noticing one 's graying to white hair color wrinkles and sagging skin , deteriorating strength and mobility and most of all dress codes and fashion . Memory and numbers efficiency is too subtle and slow in change that its characteristic only emerges starting at the age of 35 . The integration and maintenance of older people for social life along with the young and middle aged bracket could be horrifying at times noting that oldies

tend to exercise authority whenever they could and it will take a great deal of patience and creativity for the young ones to cope up with mellowed act and lots of communication expertise to get the ideas across and keep on with the discussion . Social relations and mutual support from friends and families have a lot to do with sustaining older people 's morale independence , and that undying feeling of youthfulness . This is the very reason I admired this 86 year old woman who had exhibited great wisdom during my interview

She was quite independent at home doing all her household chores . She drives alone and did her groceries all by herself . She is an active member of her church and a very efficient caretaker of her sister . She prepares her own meals and maintains her own finances . The will to survive and the will to manage oneself were very evident and well illustrated . Communication was never a problem with her because all her faculties were amazingly working well despite her age . Listening was a good form of communication while she incessantly chatted and reflected memorable experiences . Talking with old people can 't be so objective because they welcome the company and the ears that will give them the opportunity to unload a lot of experiences that may well served its purpose . I had been forming a lot of theories and stories about their world of yesterday and my world of today with great respect . And honestly I appreciated practicing my patience as well waiting for them to calm down with their stories before I could go on with my interview Expressing my thoughts and my feelings by speaking clearly , with matching facial expression and equal posture and gesture of interest reveals my understanding of the prevailing discussion . I never assume that I understood anything . I always ask and never speed talk . Open ended questions were used to clarify on certain things and to make them feel comfortable and gain authority over the interview . Message pacing was a big help not to get bored with the discussion (Potter Perry 2005 . Instituting a little detour with the subject asking about their family and their incoming weekend activities gave both of us the chance for a little break for relaxation and short term bonding .
