The Watergate Scandal refers to spates of US political scandals that took place during President Richard Nixon 's presidential tenure . The Watergate Scandal resulted in the judicial indictments of a number of Richard Nixon 's political and economic think tanks and eventually President Nixon 's resignation which he tendered on August 9th 1974 . Subsequent and comprehensive investigations that were carried out by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (commonly known and put in acronym as FBI ) and later the Senate Watergate Committee , the press and House Judiciary Committee produced revelations that the break in (burglary was merely one of the illegal activities sanctioned by President Nixon 's staff

However , it is needful to take stock of the fact that these investigations on the Watergate Scandal was nothing more than a Pandora box that betrayed a wider spectrum of crimes , abuses , political campaign fraud , political sabotage and espionage , other illegal break ins , wide scale illegal wiretappings , inappropriate tax audits , and subsequently the appropriation and forwarding of slush funds that were laundered in Mexico as payment for those who executed these operations .
