Watergate on Politics 1 Watergate on Politics I believe this to be the strongest government on earth . the only one where every individual . would flutter to the degree of the law , and would meet invasions of the public as his own personal concern ' stated Thomas Jefferson in his inaugural address , March 4 , 1801 It started on June 17 , 1972 , that Watergate began when burglary was committed in the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate hotel complex in Washington D .C . The five men were

charged and arrested for burglary and wiretapping
White House officials E . Howard Hunt , Jr a former White House aide and G . Gordon
Liddy a general counsel for the Committee for the Re-election of the president . A seven men were tried before judge John J . Sirica , chief judge of the U .S . District Court of
District Columbia . Around 2 :30 a .m . when the five men were arrested wearing business
suits and latex gloves , they were taken to the Democratic National Committee . Along
with repairing wiretapping equipment and taking pictures of documentation . On
September 15 , indictments were given on the five men and including Liddy and Hunt and
were convicted of conspiracy , burglary , and illegal wiretapping . Hunt and Liddy were
nicknamed the Plumbers ' that had been established by John Ehrlichman to prevent any
information leaking from the White House . The Plumbers were against Democrats and
known for the Pentagon s , where it involved the break-in of the Pentagon employee

and an awkwardness for the Kennedy administration
On July 16 , 1973 , the former White House official Alexander Butterfield made testimony
to the Ervin Committee that there were actual taped conversations made by Nixon . Nixon
claimed that no other than his staff weren 't involved in the scandal . A Watergate
investigation was declared by Democratic Senator Mike Mansfield . Judge Sirica ed
that Nixon hand over the tapes . Nixon made appeal that as president he should have the
authority to disclose the tapes . The Supreme Court however rejected the claim and
ed that Nixon be made to obey the subpoena . The evidence was brought to the
Judiciary Committee and brought against Nixon that would lead to an impeachment
investigation . During April 1974 , 42 tapes were subpoenaed by the committee and edited
transcripts were released by Nixon but not the actual recordings of the 46 conversations
taken place and as to whether Nixon was part of the conspiracy . However the evidence
clearly substantiates the vulgar speech made by Nixon . The impeachment hearings were
taken place by the House Committee , as five of the possible impeachments , three had
been approved . Nixon faced impeachment and removal from office and his successor
Gerald Ford had pardoned him for the crimes committed during his presidency and was
named unindicted co-conspirator
The Watergate scandal had made the political system deeply disturbed and the 1974
