p Introduction

Beijiang river in China is affected with accident of cadmium pollution which is a very serious issue . Shaoguan smelter for the past 40 years has been engaged in zinc and lead smelting . The current output is ranging from 230 - 240 ,000 tonnes amounting to 2 .4bn yuan in the year 2004 . For the year 2005 the company 's output was 3bn yuan paying a tax of 200m yuan . The company has 5000 workers for production , discharging 2000 tonnes per hour , of waste water with cadmium content into the Beijiang river

. Due to lack of internal control and management and lack of supervision , the Shaoguan smelter has caused an accident of pollution to the river . Its superior smelter Lingnan nonferrous metals equity co Ltd , is a listed company . Maba branch plant is a smaller smelter which is engaged in rare metals such as indium and gallium which discharges waste water with cadmium content in excessive quantities into Beijiang River in Guangdong . River Beijiang was a source for drinking water for 10 million people around the cities of Qingyuan , Foshan and Guangzhou After river pollution , people stopped consuming water from river and began to use reservoir and mountain spring water . A temporary water supply channel was also installed to supply drinking water for people Also the river water was causing damages to farmland . Release of dust pollution and residue into the air has caused several lung ailments to the people of vicinity

Conclusion

After the river pollution accident , the state administration of Beijing has suspended the production of Shaoguan smelter and stopped the discharge of waste water into Beijiang and also closed 14 other small smelters

China Environment protection agency considered as an important issue in to prevent further damage to the environment
