Various sources of pollution would be permitted a pollution limit to a certain extent . For example , the government may be more liberal to the agriculturists to adopt practices and mechanisms of reducing pollution but may be more stringent with the industry . Various water sources having pre-designed water use would have varying permissible limits for pollution . The permissible limits of release of effluents would also vary depending on the place where the effluents are released . In certain areas , especially along river banks or lakes , the setting up of the industry may be

restricted . In case accidents occur in the industry causing release of pollutants beyond the permissible limits , then the polluters have the duty to inform the Pollution Control Boards of such instances and accordingly take up damage-control measures . The Pollution Control Boards have the right to monitor , inspect and take samples to ensure that the pollution occurs within the permissible limits . More than 40 parameters for the discharge of effluents ' are being framed . If the local environment is more assimilative , then the permissible limits are more stringent (Tisdell , 2004

According to the EPA , for effective management of water pollution , the drinking water standards should be utilised as a reference point . The need to protect water from other sources (other than ground water ) would vary depending on the technological developments that would be at hand and the possibility of the public to utilize ground water . The EPA in such an instance may take up an appropriate strategy of protecting groundwater by implementing standards (Ram , 1990
