Who 's Watching (or Reading ) the Watchmen

As an institution , the comic book industry was turned on its head by Alan Moore 's Watchmen . Artistically , it signaled to the rest of the world the creative potential inside the world of sequential art .how some stories could be told through this medium that could be told through no other . However , Moore also changed the ways in which comics were

written : psychology and psychological motivations took center stage , as comics tried to live in the deconstructed spotlight that Moore placed them in . These deconstructing tropes in Watchmen include the typically garish costumes of the heroes , the notion of fighting for the greater good , and the notion of vigilante justice itself

It is difficult to ponder the archetypal hero without imagining the outlandish costumes : bright colors , needless capes , and belt buckles that could make any trucker envious . Even as Watchmen employed these typically garish costumes for its characters , they were used as deconstructions of the genre : Nite Owl and Silk Spectre address the fetishistic quality of their superhero costumes rather directly , as Nite Owl is portrayed as impotent until he dons his costume . This serves to deconstruct the motivations of the average hero .whether they fight to help save others , or they fight for the sexual satisfaction it gives them .
