The start of the Vietnam War can invariably be traced all the way back to the departure of the French colonialists . What began as a low level insbacked by China and the Soviet Union . It was against this backdrop that American intervention in Vietnam began . The United States alarmed at the spread of Communism in Asia and as part of its doctrine of containment would become involved in Vietnam

The doctrine of containment was

the driving force behind American foreign policy during the Cold War . The basis of this doctrine was to be found in the belief that nations would fall to Communism following a domino effect , till it would possibly reach the West Coast of the United States , starting with Hawaii . As such , it was argued that it would be better to fight the spread of Communism in Asia rather than wait for it to pose a direct threat to the United States

Based on this doctrine , the United States initiated its involvement starting with the formation of the Military Assistance and Advisory Group to aid the French . By 1954 , the French had surrendered and negotiated a ceasefire under the Geneva Conference .
