Britain was at the time notorious for mistreating its seamen who often lived miserable lives . Some therefore deserted their ships and joined American ones . The Britons stopped American ships in the high seas to check for British crews . The Britons also began seizing American ships that were involved in trade with France , because they were against France 's government that was under Napoleon Bonaparte
