I agree with the view of Emile Durkheim that there are certain important functions which are provided by deviance in society . In sociological context , deviance describes behaviors or actions which go against cultural norms . Violation applies to both social norms which are informal as well as rules which are formally enacted . According to Durkheim , deviance plays a major role in the society whereby it affirms the cultural norms

and values in that society

The importance of deviance may be explained by use of various examples First , if there were no evil doing , it would not be possible to refer some behavioral forms as good . Through deviance , individuals are able to identify good behavior (Catlin , 1964 . The main reason why societies make rules to govern them is due to deviant behavior existence Certainly , individuals are unable to identify deviant behavior unless there are set rules from which the behavior deviates . It is through the occurrence of deviant behavior that morality is defined and supported Second , deviance is very necessary in society because it is through reacting to it that moral boundaries are clarified . The implication of this is that referring certain individuals as deviant enables society to differentiate between wrong and right behavior . Deviance enables individuals to learn from the consequences of other individuals ' deviant behavior and avoid doing such acts
