WEEK 6

In F . Scott Fitzgerald 's This Side of Paradise , he presents the life of one Amory Blaine , which would essentially encompass an autobiographical rendition of Fitzgerald himself

It may be said that Blaine symbolized Fitzgerald 's ideal self , wherein he juxtaposed his own experiences as a student at Princeton and imposed them upon Blaine , who , perhaps would have acted differently than Fitzgerald in the latter 's own campus life

Blaine showcased himself to have largely radical ideas and perceptions relative to that of the traditional paradigm , thus representing himself

br as a radical socialist during the time of intense tradition

It may be said that Fitzgerald wished to be as Blaine and act on his own ideals and perceptions during his time at Princeton even if he knew that he would be challenging the dominant paradigm

Consciously and unconsciously , Blaine struggled to break free of the traditional rigors and limitations not only of the Princeton environment but also of society (Foster , 1968

As the natural would dictate , the perception of Princeton students would generally translate itself to the outside world as `snooty snobbish and stuck-up , where one would be judged harshly on the trappings of one 's lifestyle and social status (Clemente , 2008

Perhaps Blaine 's archetype allowed Fitzgerald to live his ideal life as an enlightened and socially-conscious student and young mind . His critical analysis of his youthful experience provided society with a literary vision of the youth and how they contributed to the cycle that society underwent in the socialization of the norms of public status

Even the writing style which Fitzgerald utilized , which presented various unstructured and never-before (at least during the time of its publishing ) transitions and elements such as poetry gave way to a new perception of the youth and the function of universities
