I . Introduction

Volcano is a vent , or opening , in the earth 's crust though which molten lava , gases , and other materials issue from the earth 's interior . The word is also used to refer to a mountain formed by the materials ejected through the vent . The most familiar type of volcano is a cone-shaped mountain with a depression at the top called a crater . Geological features similar to the volcanoes on earth have been found on Mars Jupiter 's moons , and other bodies in the solar system . The word volcano ' comes from the name of the Roman god of fire , Vulcan

Volcanoes occur in many parts of the world . There are so many volcanoes along the lands fringing the Pacific Ocean that this region is sometimes referred to as the Ring of Fire . There are also many undersea volcanoes (Behm , 2007 in some places , they rise above the surface of the ocean forming islands
