The Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN ) has served people with reliable telephone service for over many decades . Its Quality of Service guarantees , reliability and ease of use have made it an easily adopted telecommunication tool for the public . However , the PSTN having less customizable application features and inflexible infrastructure has led to the development of a new technology - Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP ) - a technology that is spreading in the business industry

The last several years the telecommunication landscape

has shifted into a new direction due to the growing VOIP usage . The span of two weeks longtime telecom icons AT T and MCI have been toppled from the corporate scene because they were acquired by SBC and Verizon . This takeover is the beginning of a massive transformation sweeping through the telecommunication industry . As a result , the barriers between phone companies , cable providers , and Voice over IP providers are rapidly eroding

This article would discover the merits and demerits of VoIP technology and the extent to which the disadvantages compromise with security
